The 17th and final aircraft of Canada’s new CC-130J Hercules fleet landed on 11 May 2012 at 8 Wing Trenton, Ontario, where it will be soon put to work in the vital tactical airlift role across Canada and around the world.

The Associate Minister of National Defence, the Honourable Julian Fantino, joined Lieutenant General Andre Deschamps, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force, along with members of 8 Wing to mark this historic milestone. Delivered on budget and ahead of schedule, this impressive aircraft provides the men and women of the Royal Canadian Air Force with the capability they need to do their job. In less than two years since the first CC-130J was delivered, the fleet has literally spanned the country and the globe in support of Canadian Forces operations.

This delivery follows the Government of Canada’s announcement in June 2006 to acquire 17 new aircraft to revitalize the CF’s current tactical airlift capabilities. The contract was awarded in December 2007 to Lockheed Martin Corporation with an approximate value of US$1.4 billion, and an in-service support contract amendment followed in January 2010, at a value of CAN$723 million for an initial period ending June 30, 2016.

The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) proudly welcomed the 17th and final aircraft of Canada’s new CC-130J Hercules fleet on May 11, 2012 at 8 Wing/CFB Trenton, where it will soon be used to provide the Canadian Forces with vital tactical airlift across Canada and around the world.

‘This truly is an historic day,” said Lieutenant-General (LGen) André Deschamps, commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force. “When I was a line pilot on the legacy CC-130s, we used to dream of days like this – and now I can proudly say those dreams have become a reality. The J-model family is complete.”

The Associate Minister of National Defence, Julian Fantino praised the speed and efficacy with which the J-model fleet has been delivered to the Canadian Forces.

“Delivered on budget and ahead of schedule, this impressive aircraft provides our airmen and airwomen of the RCAF with the capability they need to do their job,” said Mr. Fantino. “In less than two years since the first CC-130J was delivered, they have literally spanned the country and the globe in support of Canadian Forces operations.”

LGen Deschamps noted that the RCAF of the 21st Century must be agile, versatile and reliable. He also said that these qualities aptly describe Canada’s new fleet of CC-130J Hercules.

“In keeping with the motto of 436 Squadron, these new Hercs definitely carry the load,” he said. “I have always said that my priority as commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force is success in operations and I can assure you that the J-model Hercules, along with its air and ground crews, maintainers, logistics and support personnel, is a key player in executing that mission each and every day. ”

During the ceremony, the fleet showcased some of its capabilities, including the Container Delivery System (CDS) drop and tactical airlift support to Skyhawks parachute demonstration team.

The CDS drop is the most commonly used method for quickly inserting supplies military and other contingency operations.

“With its integrated digital technology, our fleet of CC-130J Hercules aircraft is capable of undertaking tactical airdrop in all weather conditions,” said Lieutenant-Colonel (LCol) Colin Keiver, commanding officer of 436 Transport Squadron. “It means that we are capable of providing airdrop support to the Canadian Forces and to the Government of Canada whenever and wherever our service is needed.”

The CC-130J also has new technologies and designs that significantly reduce the life-cycle cost of operating the aircraft while dramatically improving overall system reliability.

“These new technologies make aircraft maintenance simpler and far less frequent than earlier generations of the CC-130 aircraft,” he noted.

The CC-130J incorporates state-of-the-art technology that significantly improved performance and reduced ownership costs. In fact, early model CC-130s required more than 20 maintenance man-hours per flight hour (MMH/FH) while the new CC-130J only requires approximately 10 or less MMH/FH.

As a workhorse of the RCAF, the CC-130Js are used in a wide variety of roles including training, and transporting equipment, troops and supplies to, from and within a theatre of operations.

Since the delivery of the first CC-130J Hercules aircraft on June 4, 2010, the fleet has logged more than 5,800 hours of flight time in service to Canadians at home and abroad. It has achieved an impressive operational record that includes supporting Operation Athena in Afghanistan and Operation Mobile, Canada’s contribution to the NATO-led mission to protect the people of Libya.

With its dedication to serve Canadians at home, the CC-130J Hercules fleet has actively participated in a number of operations and joint exercises including assisting in the evacuation of Canadians from forest fires in the summer of 2011. In addition, September 2011 marked the first time that the annual resupply mission to Canadian Forces Station Alert in the Arctic (Operation Boxtop) was carried out using solely by the CC-130J.

The CC-130J fleet is routinely flying approximately six aircraft a day in support of both 436 and 426 Squadrons.

“This has been made possible, in no small way, due to the significant efforts of the CC-130J aircrew and maintainers at 436 Squadron who strive to excel with a still-growing cadre of experience as they continue to train in order to reach the fleet’s full operational capability,” said LCol Keiver.

As a dedicated “workhorse” of the RCAF, the new CC-130J Hercules fleet strives to fulfill its duties to “carry the load.”

LGen Deschamps captured the mood of the event perfectly when he concluded his remarks by saying, “Through the use of this fully modern capability – perfectly suited to the missions of the 21st century – as well through our CC-177 Globemaster heavy airlifters, our fully modernized CF-18 fighter jets, our soon-to-be delivered Chinook helicopters and the rest of our fleets, the RCAF is better positioned than at any time in recent history to protect Canadian interests here at home and around the world. And for that we are truly grateful and extremely proud.”

8 WING, TRENTON, ONTARIO — The Honourable Julian Fantino, Associate Minister of National Defence, joined by Lieutenant-General Andre Deschamps, Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), and members of 8 Wing Trenton, today welcomed the ahead-of-schedule arrival of Canada’s 17th and final new CC-130J Hercules aircraft, which will be put to work very soon in the vital tactical airlift role across the country and around the world.

“Today’s announcement of the ahead-of-schedule completion of Canada’s CC-130J Hercules delivery is welcome news for the Canadian Forces,” said Minister Fantino. “Our government is once again demonstrating our commitment to providing our brave men and women in uniform with the tools they need to conduct successful missions at home and abroad.”

“The Royal Canadian Air Force of the 21st Century must be agile, versatile, and reliable,” said LGen Deschamps. “These are also terms that aptly describe our new fleet of CC-130J Hercules. And in keeping with the motto of 436 Squadron, they definitely ‘carry the load.’ ”

The Canadian Forces welcomed delivery of its first two CC-130J Hercules tactical aircraft six months ahead of schedule in June 2010. Today’s delivery of the final CC-130J Hercules to 8 Wing Trenton by Lockheed Martin was completed on-budget and three months ahead of the contracted deadline of August 30, 2012.

As a workhorse of the RCAF, the CC-130Js are used in a wide variety of roles, including transporting equipment, troops and supplies to, from, and within a theatre of operations. This fleet has already accumulated an impressive operational record supporting Operation Athena in Afghanistan and Operation Mobile, Canada’s contribution to the NATO-led mission to protect the people of Libya.

Across Canada, the fleet has been actively participating in a number of operations and joint exercises, including assisting in the evacuation of Canadians from forest fires in the summer of 2011. In addition, September 2011 marked the first time that the annual resupply mission to Canadian Forces Station Alert in the Arctic (Operation Boxtop) was carried out using solely the CC-130J.

Today’s delivery follows the Government of Canada’s announcement in June 2006 to acquire 17 new aircraft to revitalize the Canadian Forces’ current tactical airlift capabilities.

When this contract was awarded, Lockheed Martin committed to investing 100 per cent of the contract’s value in Canada through the Government of Canada’s Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) Policy. This policy ensures that economic benefits flow to Canada as a result of major defence and security procurements.

The Royal Canadian Air Force formally accepted the 17th Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT] CC-130J Super Hercules in ceremonies here today, completing the order placed in December 2007. The aircraft will be flown to Canadian Forces Base Trenton later this week.

The original contract called for all 17 aircraft to be delivered by the end of 2012. The first CC-130J was accepted in June 2010 and today’s acceptance demonstrates the success of the program and the completion of deliveries ahead of schedule.

“The delivery of the final CC-130J Hercules to the RCAF represents a significant milestone in the history of the RCAF,” said Lt. Col. Colin Keiver, Commanding Officer, 436 (T) Squadron. “The aircraft has already proven its worth around the world in places like Afghanistan and Libya, as well as here at home in Canada. Our partners at Lockheed Martin have delivered us an aircraft that more than lives up to the motto of 436 Squadron, Onus Portamus or ‘We Carry the Load.’”

“The C 130 Hercules has acquired many nicknames and affectionate titles over the years, but it is in Canada that the aircraft has earned a name that I think summarizes the true meaning of this aircraft – Workhorse,” said George Shultz, Lockheed Martin vice president and general manager, C-130 Programs. “Today recognizes another great chapter in Canadian airlift history and in the continuation and expansion of the long and strong relationships with our industrial partners in Canada.”

To date, Lockheed Martin has delivered more than $350 million in Industrial and Regional Benefits (IRB) to Canadian industry as a result of the Government of Canada’s procurement of the CC-130J aircraft and In-Service Support.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs about 123,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services. The Corporation’s net sales for 2011 were $46.5 billion.

BETHESDA, Md., Apr. 26, 2012 – Lockheed Martin today announced that Chairman and CEO Bob Stevens, 60, informed the board of directors of his plans to retire as CEO after 25 years of service with the company. President and COO Chris Kubasik, 51, will succeed Stevens as CEO effective January 1, 2013. Subject to election by shareholders and approval by the board, Stevens will remain chairman through January 2014.

The board also elected Marillyn A. Hewson, 58, to succeed Kubasik as president and COO, effective January 1, 2013. Hewson’s successor as executive vice president of Lockheed Martin’s Electronic Systems business area will be announced later this year.

“Continuous global economic and security challenges have created a new reality in which leadership with a long-term view can provide a sustained competitive advantage,” Stevens said. “Chris and Marillyn are superbly well prepared to guide the continuous evolution of Lockheed Martin’s strategies and operating concepts in ways that will allow us to simultaneously address the evolving needs of customers and the expectations of shareholders.”

“Bob Stevens has had an extraordinarily distinguished career, working tirelessly on behalf of Lockheed Martin’s customers, shareholders and employees by applying his full spectrum leadership to build a strategically focused company with a portfolio shaped to meet the challenges of today’s global security environment,” said Douglas H. McCorkindale, Lockheed Martin’s lead director. “Throughout his tenure, Bob and the board have focused on developing talent and assuring a high-quality succession plan as a cornerstone of good corporate governance. As a result, incredibly talented leaders like Chris and Marillyn are ready to assume greater responsibilities.”

Kubasik has served as president and COO since January 2010, and he has served with Stevens in the executive office of the chairman since October 2011. He previously was executive vice president of the Electronic Systems business area and, earlier, the corporation’s chief financial officer.

Kubasik received an executive engineering certificate from Carnegie Mellon University in 2008 and completed the Systems Acquisition Management Course for Flag Officers at the Defense Acquisition University in 2004. He received his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Maryland in 1983. Kubasik serves on the USO Board of Governors and the University of Maryland College Park Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

Hewson was named executive vice president of the Electronic Systems business area in January 2010. In serving the company for 29 years, she has held leadership positions on the corporate staff and in three of the corporation’s four businesses.

Hewson earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in economics from The University of Alabama. She also attended the Columbia Business School and Harvard Business School executive development programs. She chairs the Sandia Corporation board of directors and she serves on the board of DuPont. Hewson is a member of the Association of the United States Army Council of Trustees and the University of Alabama’s Culverhouse College of Commerce and Business Administration Board of Visitors.

After serving as chief financial officer, Stevens was named president in 2000, and became CEO in 2004. He serves on the international advisory boards of the Atlantic Council and the British-American Business Council and he is on the executive committee of the Aerospace Industries Association board of governors. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, lead director of the Monsanto Company, and a member of the board of directors of the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation. A U.S. Marine Corps veteran, Stevens has been honored by numerous military, professional, business and industry groups.

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company that employs about 123,000 people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture, integration and sustainment of advanced technology systems, products and services.
